There’s been nearly universal praise for the latest book, King Charles III: New King, New Court, written by royal biographer Robert Hardman. I can add my voice to the choir. I loved the book, and for today’s discussion post, I thought I’d highlight some of the interesting royal jewelry anecdotes featured in the text.
The Imperial State Crown and Orb were meaningful symbols for the royals after Queen Elizabeth II’s death. Hardman notes that both were firmly bolted to the late Queen’s coffin for her lying-in-state and her funeral. For the Princess Royal, the sight of Crown Jeweller Mark Appleby removing the crown from her mother’s coffin after her funeral services gave her, “rather weirdly,” a “sense of relief–that somehow it’s all finished.”
